All those English runs that were scored on Thursday and Friday will count for very little if South Africa manage to save the First Test. All the old clichés about taking 20 wickets started to ring true for England as McKenzie and Smith settled in for the long haul, much as they should have in their first innings.
England have often failed in the past to take advantage of good positions in a match or in a series, whilst South Africa have in the past conceded big totals early on, only for their attack to later dominate. The odds on South Africa to win the series, as I write, are slightly longer (on Betfair) than for England. Maybe the Saffers are worth a punt.
